Oldenburg Vineyard Series Chardonnay 2021, perfect match with my Beer Battered Fish…

Oldenburg Vineyard Series Chardonnay 2021

Oldenburg Vineyards is situated in the Banghoek Bowl, a cooler part of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. Winemaker Nic van Aarde has been in place for a couple of years and is really producing some sublime wines.

Chardonnay – freshly harvested

This wine, all Chardonnay from the Estate, was made from grapes harvested by hand off 14 and 15 year old trellised vines which grow on alluvial and decomposed Table Mountain Granite and some from alluvial soils. In the cellar, Nic and his team sort through the bunches and the healthy ones are placed in a pneumatic press where juice is pressed on a gentle Champagne programme. The resultant juice is then settled clear overnight before being taken to 33% new 228 litre French Oak Barrels where fermentation happens spontaneously. Malolactic fermentation took place in some of the barrels. After 11 months in barrel, the wines were blended and prepared for bottling.

Pour

From a Burgundy shaped, vine leaf coloured bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is fun and quirky. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden hay in colour. The aromas are classic Chardonnay and most beguiling. Soft dried Turkish apricots, a mélange of citrus from grapefruit through lemon and lime and whiffs of poached quince. The palate, from entry has a fresh line of acidity which runs through from entry to the long and gently waning aftertaste. The mid palate is rich and generous, nicely weighted. The aftertaste is a harmonious with an overlay of aromatic white flowers, windfall oranges and orange melon.

Pair

While the Oldenburg Vineyard Series Chardonnay 2021 is a fine sipping wines, it is made for a well prepared dish of food. Anything from a fine roasted buttered organic chicken, through dishes like Ceviche, Sushi and Sashimi. Even a humble tranche of hake fried in lemon and parsley butter. Or if you want real crunch, My Beer Battered Fish is a great partner. Click HERE for my recipe.
