Muratie Ronnie Melck Shiraz 2016, so good with Alida Ryder’s Creamy Bacon Pasta Bake…

Muratie Ronnie Melck Shiraz 2016

The progenitor of the Melck Family in South Africa, Martin Melck owned Muratie from 1763 until 1781. Ronnie Melck, a legend in his lifetime bought the Estate from Miss Annemie Canitz in 1987. Her father, the well-known artist George Canitz owned the farm before her. This, apart from his great achievements in the wine industry, was Ronnie’s legacy. He remains at rest on the estate in the shade of trees on the highest part of Muratie.

Made in traditional open fermenters and matured for 16 months in 100% French oak (20% new), this wine honours his warm personality, ‘photographic palate’ and instinctive flair for winemaking.

Annatjie Melck, Chateleine of Muratie. Great cook and hostess

His widow, Annatjie lives in the Manor House on the Estate, while Ronnie’s son Rijk and his wife Kim, run the Estate.

From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is an opaque dark bloodplum red which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are classical Shiraz, bright fruited black plums with rustic berries like roadside brambles and mulberries. These are repeated on the rich and generous palate which reminds of charcuterie, with a grind of pepper. But it is the fruit, the perfect acidity and the oak and tannins which will allow this wine to age. Will eminently drinkable now, it will reward you after a couple of years of cool cellaring. An impressive glass, as impressive as the man it honours.

The Muratie Ronnie Melck 2016, is an ideal food wine. It will happily complement red meats, duck or game birds as much as it will a lusty vegetarian main course such as Melanzane Parmiggiana. As a midweek supper dish when you want a good bottle after a hard day, Alida Ryder’s Creamy Bacon Pasta Bake is a good place to start. Click HERE for her recipe.
