In the 5 generations that the De Villers Family have owned and managed Landskroon Wine Estate, each patriarch, Paul, has been the Cellarmaster. Appropriate therefore that the family have named what could be the flagship wine of the Estate after the 5 Pauls. I once asked Paul de Villiers V, the current Cellarmaster who he would like as the ideal dinner guests and he said, “the other 4 Pauls.”
Cabernet Sauvignon is, of course the King of red wine grapes with its origins in Bordeaux, Atlantic France, where it produces some of the truly great wines of the world. The Landskroon Vineyards are on the slopes of the iconic Paarl Mountain facing south west down to the horizon on which Table Mountain is a major feature.
Once carefully selected and harvested by hand, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks with punch down applied regularly. Once pressed, the wine goes into Oak Barrels, 70% French, and the balance American White Oak for 16 months. 60% of the barrels were new, with the balance 2nd fill. While eminently drinkable now, a couple of years of cool cellaring will certainly reward you.
From the classical Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is in black and supremely elegant. In the glass, the wine is a gem bright bloodplum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are classical Cabernet, cassis, blueberries, mulberries and pencil shavings. The palate has a lovely acidity line running through it from entry. Generous, rich fruit and wild violets. The mélange of fruit, tannin and acidity all ending in perfect harmony. A truly impressive glass.
The Landskroon Paul de Villiers Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is the perfect bottle for after dinner by the fireplace serious discussion whether Boishaai or Gim will win the Annual Rugby Derby. Paul de Villiers has made it as a perfect food partner. Tony Jackman, the Cradock based Journo and great cook, writes a couple of his food experience articles each week in the Daily Maverick.
