Landskroon Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Paul de Villiers V, the Cellarmaster at Landskroon, which his family has owned for 5 generations, has been recently praised by Miguel Chan, The Wine Man at TsogoSun who said of Landskroon Wines ‘they are nailing ripeness, pinpoint freshness, savoury juicy and a pleasure to drink.’ Couldn’t have put it better myself. A guaranteed delicious wine for local wine drinkers to lift off the shelves.

The Landskroon Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a product of west facing slopes, and when I think of the truly delicious Cabernets which are grown thus, are all the better for it.
Once harvested, the grapes are taken to the cellar where the bunches are stripped of their grapes which are taken to open top fermenters. During the early stages of fermentation, regular punch downs take place which pushes the ‘cap’ of the grapes under the fermenting wine. This improves colour and flavour extraction. After fermentation, maturation takes place in Oak Barrels, 5% of which were new French Oak. While the remainder were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fill French, and some American Oak Barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

Pour
From a classical Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is elegant in a recently new design. In the glass, s deeply dark bloodplum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas and palate are Cab Classic. Blackcurrants, dark berries, and plums. Oak is present as a support to the fruit with its cedary spice and vanilla. The tannins are soft and there is a lovely line of acidity running through from entry into the long and gently waning aftertaste. An impressive glass with a high quality to price ration. As, indeed, are all Landskroon Wines. Ready to drink now but would love a bit of cool cellaring for couple of years.

The Landskroon Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is an excellent sipping wine while watching rugby on TV in the comfortable presence of a fireplace. A stick of biltong and a sharp pen knife will complete the picture. Of course, it is a perfect wine for red meat. The current activity on the Estate is the planting of new Merlot Vineyards, each year planting just before Spring, results in the vines settling in to the soil and waiting for the first harvest in four year’s time. Planting vines is a long term investment.
