La Motte Wine Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
La Motte Wine Estate is a Jewel in the Crown of the Franschhoek Wine Appellation. An Estate of great beauty with its Cape Dutch Style Manor House as the centre piece. There is also a bakery, run by the fabled Markus Farbinger, a charming farm shop, and an Art Gallery which features, amongst others, the works of the famous South African Painter Hendrik Pierneef.
Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche
While the estate is in the Franschhoek Wine Appellation, Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche has access to grapes from other Appellations. The La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is made from grapes which originate from the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, renowned for producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignons in South Africa
The wine was matured for 24 months in 300-litre French oak barrels – 50% new and 50% second fill. The various Cabernet Sauvignon batches were blended and filtered before being bottled in August 2022
Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label, like everything at La Motte is elegant and simple. In the glass, the wine is a gem bright, and an opaque blood plum in colour. The aromas are of the classical Cabernet variety. Rich dark berry fruits, blackcurrants, oak with its concomitant spices and fynbos herbs. An excellent palate, full, rich and generous, and the aromas which segue uninterrupted on to the palate. Excellent tannin structure. A wine eminently drinkable now, though would reward after a couple of years of cool cellaring.
The Chardonnay grapes for this wine come from the Estate in Franschhoek. One third of the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks with no malolactic fermentation.
Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a crew cap. The label is simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a pale honeyed straw. The aromas are very beguiling. Brilliant fruit, citrus mainly and orange flower water. The finely applied oak maturation shows itself as toasted hazel nut brioche. These aromas repeat themselves on the long and gently waning palate. The beautiful fruit is vibrant on entry, sappy with fleshed peaches and a mic of citrus fruits.

Pair
This is one occasion when I can offer a single dish for two very different wines. Dianne Bibby’s Coq au Vin Pot Pie is delicious with either… Click HERE for her recipe.
