The Krone MCC story is as rich in history as it is as one of the dedicated Méthode Cap Classique Sparkling Wine Producers in the Cape Winelands. Family owned and managed by the Rands Family Twee Jongegezellen has brother and sister Svend and Abigail involved in all aspects of running the Estate
This wine was made from grapes hand harvested at night time when the vineyards are cool. The vineyards are in a wine ward called Elandskloof which is not too far from Villiersdorp. Here at 700 metres about sea level, the Kaaimansgat [Crocodile Lair] vineyards have likely never seen a crocodile. In this height of the worst drought in living memory, the grapes were not touched by the weather of extremes which was experienced that year. It would be two years before the drought broke in the Winter of 2018. The bunches and the berries and bunches were smaller, though the grapes were perfect in terms of quality with intense concentrated flavours.
Once in the cellar, the grapes were destalked and crushed. Only the free-run juice, the first 500 litres known as the cuvée is used for this wine. The second fermentation in the bottle is followed by three years of maturation, this continues after release.
From a traditional Champagne shaped bottle, closed with natural cork and the little wire muzzle. The packaging as you will see from the above, is so simple and elegant, totally befitting for the wine. In the glass, the wine is a pale gold in colour with a rush of the tiniest of bubbles to the surface where they form a crown around the edges. The first whiffs are herbal, Melissa and orange flowers and then the elegance of the Chardonnay. The centre palate has flavour of the crust of a fresh baked brioche bread, with the magical acidity one expects from a wine like this. Eminently drinkable now, though you will be rewarded after a couple of years of cool cellaring.
The Krone Kaaimansgat Blanc de Blancs 2016 is a wine to enjoy on its own as a mid morning refresher or sundown sipper as an aperitif it ticks the boxes. With food, it is a winner. Though the food needs to be simple and well prepared. Whitebait is an excellent partner. Just tossed in seasoned flour and then flash fried in hot oil and served with a homemade lemon mayonnaise. Trout or salmon over a braai is excellent, especially if you let it come to ambient temperature and eat it with your hands. For the vegetarians, forest mushrooms with a grating of parmesan is just so delicious. I could go on and on. It works with desserts too, particularly stone of deciduous fruits poached in a simple vanilla syrup….
