If there is ever a Wine Estate visit which should be on your bucket list for a visit it is Glenelly, in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. Purchased in the early noughties by Bordeaux legend Mme May Eliane de Lencquesaing. This impressive nonagenarian, a former owner of Chateau Pichon Lalande a well-known Chateau in Bordeaux, set about remodelling this estate which was a plum farm, into a showpiece, and a place if wine excellence. The Glenelly Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2016 is the flagship white wine produced by award winning winemaker Luke O’Cuinnegain.
The winter of 2015 was later than usual, and the rainfall was lower. This meant lower soil moisture levels and stress in the vines later in the season, resulting in smaller berries and lighter bunches.
The grapes for the Glenelly Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2016 were whole bunch pressed and the juice cold settled. The juice is taken to French oak barrels for fermentation using the natural vineyard yeasts. The barrels were a combination new and second full blond toasted barrels. 11 months maturation took place on the lees. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
It looks like
Bottled under a natural cork closure, in a Burgundy shaped bottle with an elegant etched image of the Estate. In the glass, the wine is a rich straw colour, gem bright and crystal clear.
It smells like
Sweet tropical limes, creamy vanilla fudge and pear drops.
It tastes like
From entry through to exit, there is a golden thread of acidity and minerals. Full palate of poached quince and winter melon. Windfall citrus is interwoven with the fruit and crisp acidity in the long and gently waning tail.
