Delaire Graff Wine Estate is situated in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation at the crest of the link between the Simonsberg and Botmaskop Mountains overlooking the Banghoek Valley. A luxury and complete tourist destination, which has won many awards, for its wines, its restaurants and its lodges and spa.
Morné Vrey the Winemaker, himself a person of note, and his team, have the grapes from the Estate at hand, and he also uses wine grapes from other regions as he has in this fine wine.
Classical weather conditions led to a lighter crop and smaller berries on the bunches as a result of windy conditions. Excellent acidity and balancing residual sugar are found in this concentrated and structured wine.
The grapes were sourced from 30 to 40 year old dry land bush vines in the Swartland region, and were handpicked in the fresh hours of the early morning in 18kg lug boxes. Bunch sorting took place before whole bunch pressing with no sulphur added and barrel fermented for 14 days. Maturation took place in French barrels for 10 months with 60% in 400 litre barrels and 40% in 2500 litre Foudre barrels. No batonnage or malolactic fermentation took place in order to retain freshness. The wine was then prepared for bottling
From a Burgundy shaped bottle and closed with a screw cap. The label is classical elegant Delaire Graff. In the glass, the wine is a light pale straw in colour. The aromas and palate segue one into the other. Citrus, green apples, sub-tropical fruits, white flowers, and fynbos honey. From entry the wine is so beautifully balanced through the mid palate into the long and gently waning aftertaste with a whisper of minerality. Eminently drinkable now.

The Delaire Graff Swartland Reserve Chenin Blanc 2020 is a fine sipping wine for casual conversation at sundown. One thing I admire so much about Chenin Blanc is how versatile it is with food. My best accompaniment is a butter roasted organic chicken with all the traditional accompaniments, rustly roast potatoes, real gravy. It also works really well with Sushi, Sashimi and Ceviche.
