Delaire Graff Wine Estate sits at the top of the Helshoogte Pass, overlooking Stellenbosch in the West with the Simonsberg and the Banghoek Valley before it. The 2019 vintage was the first after the awful drought broke. Uncertain conditions during bud break and flowering contributed to small bunches with smaller berries, a good omen as the red wines off the estate show concentration and elegance. The elevation and fermentation took place at cooler temperatures and Winemaker Morné Vrey ensured gentle extraction of fruit flavours. The wine was matured for twelve months in previous fill French oak barrels to support the fresh fruit of the wine. Preparation and bottling then took place.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is in black with mainly silver printing, very elegant. In the glass the wine is a dark ruby at the heart which pales out to a purple tinged garnet at the edges. The aromas are of plums, spice from the oak and berries. The palate, from entry, is silken soft, harmonious with a whiff of charcuterie in the aftertaste.
The Delaire Graff Shiraz 2019 is an excellent food wine. It loves spicy food like so many of our traditional South African Dishes. A good piece of spicy boerewors off the braai. A Lamb and Cabbage Bredie in the style of Louis Leipoldt. Click HERE for my recipe.
