Delaire Graff Estate, in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, is blessed with a fine climate, good quality grapes and a fine team under Winemaker Morné Vrey which turs our some truly sublime wines. The Western Cape has recently survived the worst drought in living memory, even though we have had ample rainfall in the region, the vines will be affected for some time. For the Delaire Graff Banghoek Reserve Chardonnay 2017 however, quality of health, small berries with great flavour intensity were the norm on the Estate for 2017. Warm days and cool nights allowed for slower and more flavourful ripening,
The grapes for the Delaire Graff Banghoek Reserve Chardonnay 2017 came from the Estate’s Mountain Vineyards. They were hand harvested at different stages in the ideal ripeness window. Meticulous bunch sorting by Morné and his team took place before the grapes were gently whole bunch pressed to extract the finest juice. Fermentation took place in barrel for 14 days. The wine was then matured in a mix of French oak barrels, 40% new and the remainder previous fill. The wines had no batonnage during this time, nor did malolactic fermentation take place. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy Shaped bottle, closed with a black screw cap. The label is the classical simple Delaire Graff style. In the glass, the wine is a gem bright pale gold straw in colour. From entry there is a thread of perfect acidity, minerals which go through to the long and lasting aftertaste where they are interwoven with the fabulous fruit and the undertow of gentle and appropriate oaking. The layers of sweet fruited citrus, ripe white fleshed peaches, fynbos honey and the oak with its concomitant spices are so beguiling. Really great glass.
The Delaire Graff Banghoek Reserve Chardonnay 2017 is essentially a food wine. Perhaps a gentle sipping wine at sundown after a long day. This wine is packed with flavour and can complement fuller flavoured dishes like a Roast Belly of Pork with Roasted Granny Smith Apples. It is good with Carey Boucher Erasmus’s Chicken Liver Parfait, Spiced Cranberry Compote & Brioche. Click HERE for her recipe.
