De Grendel Shiraz 2018

De Grendel Wine Estate is situated in the small Durbanville Wine Appellation on the South facing slopes of the Tygerberg Hills facing Table Mountain with Table Bay and Robben Island off to the West. 2018 was the last vintage before the worst drought in living memory was broken.

The grapes for the De Grendel Shiraz 2018 came in three batches, the first from Paarl, followed by the second and third batches from Firgrove. The Paarl grapes were fermented for two weeks in closed conical shape tanks using the more delicate aerated pump-over method, ensuring softer tannins, delicate spicy flavours and a deep colour. The Firgrove batches were separately fermented using the pneumatic punch-down method four times a day to produce more robust tannins with excellent structure and concentration. The three components were blended and the wine was allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then racked three times before being taken to oak barrel maturation which took place over a period of 13 months in 10% new American Oak, 10% in new French Oak and 80% in second and third fill French Oak Barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with an elegant screw cap. The label is classical, simple, elegant De Grendel. In the glass, it is a deep violet tinted bloodplum at the heart. This pales out to purple ruby at the edges. The aromas remind of a rich, spicy Christmas Pudding, scrunched up fynbos herbs, and Agen prune plums. The palate has a golden thread of raspberry acidity and soft tannins from entry through to the long aftertaste. The mid palate is a happy jumble of berries and cherries, oak and its concomitant spices, and an undertow of smoked charcuterie. Impressive glass, eminently drinkable now, though will reward with a year or two of cool cellaring.
