Altydgedacht Wine Estate, in the Durbanville Wine Appellation, has been producing fine wine for a number of years. I remember visiting the family, who were great friends of my parents many times. It always had an air of serenity about it.
Today, Altydgedacht is under new ownership, with a new wine maker, Helgard van Schalkwyk. The Estate produces interesting varieties such as Barbera, Gewurztraminer and makes a dream Pinotage. I also love the new livery.
The Parker Family were custodians of the farm since 1852, a legacy spanning six generations. George Francis Parker, then aged 19, arrived at the Cape with his family in 1819, with one of the many groups of settlers sent by the English government to the Cape and the Australian colonies.
A partnership between the old and the new was formed in 2017 between two Durbanville families; The Parker Family of Altydgedacht and The Van Der Merwe Family of VDMV Property Group.
This marks the beginning of a new era for Altydgedacht.
Can’t wait to see how things develop..
