Advent Calendar #21, Durbanville Hills Tangram Red Blend 2017

Durbanville Hills Winery is situated in the Durbanville Wine Appellation on a promontory overlooking Table Mountain and Table Bay, through which the cold Benguela Current flows northwards. Breezes off the ocean ameliorate summer heat in the vineyards and allow for longer hang time for the bunches before they ripen. Greater ripeness equals greater flavour in the ultimate wine.

A Tangram is a Chinese geometrical seven-piece puzzle which can be arranged in certain patterns for each to tell a story. There are 5 parts to the puzzle of the Durbanville Hills Tangram Red Blend 2017. Noble red grapes, whose origins are in Bordeaux are artfully blended to create a sum far greater than the parts. The blend, made up by Red Wine Specialist Wilhelm Coetzee and his team, is made up of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 14% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot, and 14% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are provided by 9 grape growers in Durbanville who are in partnership with the Winery and Distell, a large South African Wine & Spirits Company.

The grapes were separately vinified with the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot berries, after sorting, go into open top 1000 litre tubs. The Malbec went into 500 litre open top barrels. Pressing was done in a basket press and the wines taken for maturation. New French Oak Barrels were chosen for this process. After 2 years, the finest barrels were chosen, and the Tasting Team took 3 days to come up with the best blend. After the blending, the wine was bottled and lay maturing for a further year before going out into the Market
