Advent Calendar Wine #12, 2022. Namaqua Sweet Wines, Hanepoot Jerepigo and Red Muscadel, perfect additions to your Christmas Table…

Namaqua Sweet Wines, Hanepoot Jerepigo

Namaqualand and the West Coast are such special places. While the Namaqua Winery has a wide range of excellent wines on the market, I want to talk about their superb sweet, fortified wines. I feel that these wines are underappreciated. They are so so delicious and the quality to price ratio is high. The wines are made in the same way. Clear, cool settled grape juice is allowed to ferment for a short while and when the residual sugar levels are as the winemaker wants them in the final wine, the wines are fortified by fine brandy spirit. This stops the fermentation process. The wine is then prepared for bottling, resulting in jewel like clarity in the final product.

Namaqua Sweet Wines – Red Muscadel

These are not wines for grandma or for when the vicar comes round to tea. They are sublime when well chilled. Serve them with soda and ice as a tall drink, the red would do well with tonic, a well known drink in France. The white is wonderful with a smooth chicken liver paté and broken pieces of baguette. The red is a great partner to a creamy blue cheese lavishly smeared on slices of toasted baguette.

The grapes used, for the white is the well known Hanepoot, the Muscat of Alexandria, a sweet aromatic grape. The red is made from Red Muscat, a relation of the Alexandria Muscat.
