A Courageous and a Conqueror

I was fortunate to attend the launch of the first Perdeberg Dry Land Collection some years ago. Called Dry Land as the grapes come from old bush vines planted in the best soils where they would be sustainable with seasonal rainfall as the main water source. “We try to do things as naturally as possible, with the least intervention,” explains Perdeberg Cellarmaster Albertus Louw.  “We want to create wines that are true to this environment. We want to allow the wine to express where it comes from.”

The variation of weather, soil, drainage and altitude from vineyard to vineyard enables Perdeberg to produce a wide range of wines with distinct qualities and character. The Dry Land Collection appeals to enthusiasts who understand and appreciate natural winemaking processes, and who will enjoy sharing these expressions with others at elegant dinners and special occasions. The collection boasts well-balanced wines with complexity and concentration, but also generous drinkability. Value is also a consideration, says Louw: “We really want to try over deliver on quality for these price points.”

I recently had the opportunity to re-taste two of the Dry Land Collection Wines and was as charmed as before.

Perdeberg Courageous Old Vine Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2021

The Perdeberg Courageous Old Vine Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2021 is packed in a Burgundy shaped bottle and closed with natural cork. The label is simple and elegant and if I remember correctly, was designed by staff at the winery. The oak and its spice and vanilla supports the aromas one finds in a wine like this. Citrus, golden delicious apples, white flowers and desiccated pineapple are to e found. These segue neatly onto the palate where the entry shows a lovely acidity line through the mid palate and long aftertaste. A wine like this is an excellent sipping wine as an aperitif. It is made for well flavoured food. Roasted, buttery Organic Chicken, roasted Pork Belly with crispy crackling, and a hard cheese like Cheddar with a baguette and farm butter are al perfect pairings.

The Perdeberg Conqueror Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 reminds me of the recent vintage Cabernet Sauvignons from California. Modern and the direction in which Cabernet Sauvignon is going. The aromas are of violets, soft dried prune plums, the ever present blackcurrants, blueberries, oak spice and vanilla. These are all repeated on the palate, rich and generous and velvet tannins taking you into the long aftertaste. Perfect with a roast tranche of beef. A casseroled neck of lamb. An Aubergine Parmesan Bake would be a good vegetarian option.
