The fabled La Motte Wine Estate is situated on the main road which runs down the centre of the Franschhoek Valley. While the farm has extensive vineyards of its own, the winery also makes use of grapes from other wine regions.
Grenache Noir, the lead grape in the blend
The La Motte Vin de Joie 2022 is a blend of 71% Grenache Noir, 17% Mourvèdre, and 6% each of Shiraz and Cinsaut. The Grenache Noir comes from the Swartland and Stellenbosch Wine Appellations, the Mourvèdre and Cinsault come from Franschhoek, and the Shiraz is sourced from Elim.
Edmund Terblanche, the La Motte Winemaker
La Motte is a tourist destination on its own with a highly rated restaurant, eclectically supplied Farm Shop and an art gallery which has moving exhibitions, though also features the work of Pierneef, one of South Africa’s best-known artists from the 20th century. And then of course an elegantly decorated Tasting and Sales facility. Classical Music Concerts are also held on the Estate. The Restaurant Jan has recently opened on the Estate, operated by South Africa’s only Michelin Starred Chef, Jan van der Westhuizen.
