Durbanville is the smallest of Wine Appellations. On a promontory at the Atlantic Ocean end of this Valley, you will find the Durbanville Hills Winery. The 9 wine grape suppliers for the winery have vineyards which face in different directions and are at different levels above the sea.

The grapes for the Durbanville Hills Shiraz 2019 come from a selection of vineyards. In the glass, the wine is a bloodplum colour at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas and palate segue one into the other. The ‘sweet’ ripe dark fruits, dark chocolate and a grind of pepper are repeated on entry to the palate. The palate is medium of body, the tannins are silky soft and there is a lovely line of acidity running through into the long aftertaste. Lovely harmony at the ending.

The Durbanville Hills Shiraz 2019 is a wine for gentle sipping after dinner with a bar of snappy dark chocolate. Also excellent with a well-prepared dish. See below. Also excellent with a tranche of Dalewood Fromage Huguenot, 6 months old.

Durbanville Hills Collector’s Reserve Shiraz 2018
The grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard, which is special enough on its own. A good dark plum colour in the glass which pales out to a rich ruby at the edges. The aromas are of ripe red fruit, blueberries, sappy plums and spice and vanilla, and purple flowers. The palate is rich and generous, appealing gentle grip of tannins, a great acidity line, and the oaken spice and vanilla. An impressive glass. The wine is eminently drinkable now, though will reward you after a couple of years of cool cellaring.
Pair
Durbanville Hills Collector’s Reserve 2018 is a made for food wine. So good with roasted red meats. And duck with a fruity sauce. Also good with the aforementioned Dalewood Fromage Huguenot Estate Cheese. My Indian Curry would be a great partner in a mild form. No chillies though as they don’t like tannins in wine.
