Great Wine glasses by Riedel for the three unusuals
Interesting wines, and a truly great cider from three wine estate in different climatic regions have given us great pleasure of late.
De Grendel Three Spades Cider
Cider flies under the radar in South Africa, and it should not. Such a delicious drink and of course perfect with dishes which are from Normandy and made with apples or some of their fine cheeses. Almost Champagne like in nature, the blend is made up of five different apple varieties which provide a unique palate – 30% Golden Delicious, 30% Granny Smith, 20% Pink Lady, 10% Braeburn and 10% Fuji. Delicate, fresh, crisp and effervescent elegance is followed by fresh apple flavours. Serve in a Champagne tulip shaped glass.

De Wetshof Edeloes 2006
Made from the Noble German Riesling grape. This is the essence of the vintage. In the glass, a jewel-like amber in colour. The aromas are so deeply aromatic. Soft dried Turkish Apricot, and richly brewed Assam Tea. From entry the wine has a beautiful acidity line which runs through the rich, and unctuous honeyed palate into a clean and fresh aftertaste. A truly impressive glass.

Groot Constantia Grand Constance 2017
This is the legendary wine of Constantia. Found in the writings of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Baudelaire, it was also found in the cellars of the crowned heads of Europe. Napoleon had shipments sent to St Helena Island where he was in exile. Made from both red and white Muscat de Frontignan which are harvested late, and very sweet. There is no botrytis in the wine. In the glass, a rich polished amber in colour. The aromas are off-dried fruits, desiccated pineapple, soft dried apricots and fat Orange River raisins. These segue on to the palate with an undertow of fynbos honey and the beautiful acidity which counterbalances the grapey sweetness. Excellent with a smooth chicken liver paté and crisp toasted baguette.
