THE MYNHARDT JOUBERT FESTIVE FRUITCAKE CHARITY DRIVE IS ON, AND IT’S NOT ONLY ABOUT CAKES, BUT ABOUT PROVIDING HOPE FOR THE COMMUNITIES AT PAARL & MONTAGU…

Mynhardt Johannes Tobias Joubert V

I find that many chef’s have a huge heart beating in their chests. Their lives are about feeding people, as a business sure. Though this generosity often spills over into the communities which need help.

This week I received a box from Mynhardt Joubert, containing one of his magical KWV 10 year old Brandy soaked Christmas Fruit Cakes. Aka Mynhardt Johannes Tobias Joubert V, he is one of the busiest chefs in the Paarl Valley. If he is not creating banquets for large numbers of people in the magnificent Cathedral Cellar at the KWV Winery in Paarl, he is creating memorable intimate dinners at his home.

Fun times at Butterfly House

Each year Mynhardt makes hundreds of Christmas Cakes which he sells for charity. People are not only buying a cake, but they are participating in Hope. Mynardt feels a sense of renewed hope that the end of winter will give way to new beginnings and opportunities. His cake’s special ingredient is hope. He learned its power first hand this year. Hope is strong; it makes you believe in the impossible. Hope may start small, but well nurtured it turns into a strongly rooted tree.

Happy moments at Helpende Handjies

For six years now this fruitcake has been the way for Mynhardt and his team to do something tangible for vulnerable children in our community to believe in hope. All proceeds benefit Butterfly House, a community resource centre in the Drakenstein District – aimed at creating a hopeful future, and Helpende Handjies in Montagu. Both NGO’s run feeding schemes for children, as part of their programmes.

Here it is the slab if utter deliciousness

KWV, Sasko, Moir’s, Montagu Snacks and Lactalis are on board, and with their continued support they baked 2 000 cakes this year, 800 more than previously.

The classic red and white gift-wrapped package includes a beautiful handmade Christmas wreath, which we will be hanging off our front door for the festive season this year. As with the baking of the cakes, the Mynhardt’s whole team is involved: Vytjie the fruitcake queen with love in her finger tips, her husband Danny, Maritha Papiere, Cedrick on logistics and Jasmine Sponsie on quality control. We cut the vine shoots for the wreaths in the depth of winter, then wove them and decorated them all by hand. They do the hard work with a smile, knowing it will benefit their own communities.

The festive fruitcake sells at R450 (excluding delivery) for a 2 kg cake, gift-wrapped in recyclable packaging, baked in a square pan for easy cutting. Order online at www.mynhardt.co.za or e-mail to cake@mynhardt.co.za or whatsapp Cedrick 084 916 4506. We courier countrywide.

Go ahead, get a taste, but do keep some for later. Well-wrapped and sprinkled with brandy now and then, the flavour will improve through nurturing – just like hope.
