Spier Creative Block 2 2021, perfect partner for Carey Boucher-Erasmus’s Veal Piccata…

Spier Creative Block 2 2021

Spier Wine Farm is situated at the very heart of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. A perfect destination for the day for the family. So much to do for children as well as adults, from Segway Scooter tours of the Vineyard, The Eagle Encounter, The Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery for truly great food and, of course, The Spier Hotel should you want to overnight there.

Johan Jordaan, the Spier Cellarmaster

The Spier Creative Block 2 2021 is a blend of 94% and 6% Sémillon. The Sémillon grounding the wine adding a bit of gravitas to the final blend and reining in the somewhat Puckish Sauvignon. The wine is made by Johan Jordaan, the Spier Cellarmaster and the grapes he has chosen come from the Cape Town, Darling, and Stellenbosch. Skin contact was limited to six hours and the free-run juice drained off to settle overnight before inoculation with a carefully selected yeast strain. The fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures between 12° and 14°C. A small portion of the Sémillon was fermented in French oak barrels to add complexity to the wine. The wine is matured for four months on the lees before being prepared for bottling.

Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the hands of the harvester

From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is elegant and fits in with the other wines in this range. In the glass, the wine is a pale straw in colour. There are flashes of lime green when held up to the light. The aromas are of stone fruit with sweet tropical limes and an undertow of fynbos herbaceousness.  The palate, from entry has a beautiful line of acidity running through it, right into the long and gently waning aftertaste. The palate itself bustles with the fruit expected, pink grapefruit, a note of Cassis which is a characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc which it has given to its child Cabernet Sauvignon.

Carey Boucher – Erasmus’s Veal Piccata

The Spier Creative Block 2 2021 is an ideal sipping wine and also perfect as an aperitif. It loves food, particularly summery salads, goat’s cheese on bruschetta and dairy cheeses which I find more and more are better with white than red wine. It has to oomph to perfectly partner Carey Boucher-Erasmus’s Veal Piccata. Click HERE for her recipe.
