Simonsig Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Simonsig Wine Estate is one of the oldest in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. Situated at the Koelenhof Railway Station, Simonsig first bottled a Sauvignon Blanc in 1978. Brothers Johan and Francois Malan have found that over the last ten years that with careful site choice, clonal selection, and clever leaf canopy management, they now produce grapes which are packed with flavour from vineyards planted on the coolest site on the Estate.

Tasting in the vineyard helps Francois keep track of ripeness to determine ideal harvesting time. Once in the cellar, the grapes are destalked and crushed. Limited skin contact is allowed to maximise fruit flavours. After gentle pressing the juice is cool settled out until clear. Cool fermentation ensures intense fruit flavour retention. The wine then stays on its lees for a period of up to 6 months with regular stirring to build mouthfeel. The wine is then prepared for bottling.

From a bottle similar in shape to an Alsatian Flute with the Malan Family Crest embossed in glass just about the simple and elegant label. In the glass the wine is gem bright, pale hay in colour with youthful lime green flashes. The aromas are of granadilla, cape gooseberries, fynbos herbaceousness and freshly mown lawn. The palate, on entry, has a brilliant line of lemony lime acidity and a rich and generous mid palate with tropical fruits, melon, white guava and fresh pressed grapefruit. Beautiful ending. Impressive glass.

Semi dried West Coast horse mackerel on the braai – aka Bokkoms

The Simonsig Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is a perfect sipping wine and does good service as an aperitif. Lemon and Vodka Cream Pasta, Goat Cheese on Bruschetta, or a simple fried fresh mackerel with butter lemon and parsley are all good companions. The semi-dried Horse Mackerel of our West Coast, known as Bokkoms on the braai makes the perfect partner.
