Pissaladière – a pizza from the other side of the border, perfect with Spier Seaward Chardonnay 2019…

Spier Seaward Chardonnay 2019

Spier Wine Farm is known not only for its fabulous wines, but also for the tourist activities which go on there, perfect as a day visit for both adults and children, or indeed, an overnight in the lovely Spier Hotel.

Riedel Degustazione White Wine Glasses

Today is International White Wine Day and the perfect day to celebrate the Spier Seaward Chardonnay. The grapes, under the Cape Town Wine Appellation come from south-west facing vineyards on the cool Tygerberg Hills close to Cape Town, with oakleaf soils and a 16 km proximity to the ocean. The grapes were hand picked, taken to the Cellar and cooled down at the cellar before crushing. Skin contact was allowed for 4 hours and only free-run juice drained by gravity was used for fermentation, 80% of which fermented in stainless-steel tanks and 20% in previous fill French Oak Barrels. Thereafter, the wine spent 6 months on the lees. The oak component was blended with the stainless-steel fermented wine prior to preparation for bottling.

Spier Cellarmaster, Johan Jordaan

Spier Cellarmaster, Johan Jordaan says, “We look toward the sea for our quality terroirs. Grapes grown in close proximity to the cold Atlantic ocean ripen slower, resulting in concentrated, well-balanced wines.”

The Spier Werf

Pour

From a Burgundy shaped brown glass bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is elegant and simple and says what it needs to say. In the glass the wine is a pale citrine in colour. The aromas are of ripe white fleshed peaches, ruby grapefruit with an undertow of marzipan. The creamy palate, from entry, has a lovely line of acidity and offers sliced peach, windfall oranges and oak with its concomitant spice and vanilla. An elegant sipping wine. The wine is certified Vegan.

Pissaladière with a puff pastry base, a dish from Nice

Pair

The Spier Seaward Chardonnay 2019, while an excellent sipping wine, is perfect with food. The perfect dish as a first course or a snack is Pissaladière, a pizza from the French side of the border. I had a lovely aunt who used to come and spend weekends with us on the farm when I was a child. She always brought a tin of anchovies with her and a jar of black olives. She used to get p early on Sunday morning and make puff pastry for a Pissaladière which was served with wine or sherry before lunch. While you won’t find one at the Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery on the Spier Wine Farm, you will find some excellent food there.
