Situated at the top of the Banghoek on Helshoogte Pass, Oldenburg Vineyards, is a very special place to visit.
Surrounded by towering mountains and looking down to the Groot Drakenstein Valley, a gentle country lane gets the mood right as you approach Oldenburg and once there, the mountains tower over you giving an almost Alpine air to the farm.
The tasting room with its interior by Kelly Hoppen, well known London designer, is very tastfully done and provides the ideal place for a wine tasting and to enjoy the really stunning cheese and charcuterie platters the winery offers. The tasting room looks out over Rondekop, an enchanting little hill, which has ironstone soils which add so much to the depth of their reds.
The CEO and wine maker, Philip Costandius, adds a depth of experience to the crafting of Oldenburg’s wines, and aims to handle the wine as little as possible from grape to glass. The guiding principle is to let the grapes lead the way and ultimately create wines with balanced tannins, complexity, natural acidity and elegant fruit flavours.
Oldenburg offers a benchmark Chenin Blanc and a Chardonnay as its whites.
The reds are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot and Rhodium, which is the flagship red blend originally launched in 2013.
