Oldenburg Vineyards Series Syrah 2018

Oldenburg Vineyards is situated in the Banghoek Valley, a cooler part of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. Nic van Aarde is the winemaker, and he is producing some stunners from the cellar.

The grapes harvested off the estate’s vineyards at the end of the long drought, were smaller than usual and as a result with the higher skin to juice ratio, the wines more deeply coloured and flavoured. Also helped by cooler nighttime temperatures which allowed for slower ripening. Once in the cellar, the bunches were destalked and the grapes sorter by hand to ensure that only the finest went through for harvesting. Fermentation took place after a three-day cold soak, and during this time regular pump overs took place. Malolactic fermentation took place en barrique. Maturation took place in 30 and 500 litre French Oak Barrels [14% new] for a period of 14 months. The wine was then prepared for bottling

From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The 8 natural elements that determine the terroir are depicted on the intricate Oldenburg Vineyards Series label design. In the glass, the wine is a deep bloodplum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are of ripe plums and country lane berries like brambles and mulberries. The oak and its concomitant brown spice and vanilla is in support of the fruit. From entry the wine has present, though soft and silken tannins, rich and generous fruit, Caffé Mocha and a long gently waning aftertaste. A truly impressive glass. The wine will reward you handsomely after a couple of years of cool cellaring.

The Oldenburg Vineyards Series Syrah 2018 is an excellent sipping wine. Also, a perfect food partner. Bold spicy dishes, careful on the chilli, an excellent piece of sausage off the braai, a fine roast duck with a fruit based sauce, a breast of duck with a Chinese style or a slice of hard cheese. Alida Ryder’s Pan Seared Duck Breast with a Honey Soy Glaze is a great match. Click HERE for her recipe.
