Oldenburg Vineyards is a family owned Winery in the Banghoek Valley, a cooler part of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. 8 natural elements combine to make the wines unique and utterly special. Nic van Aarde is the Estate’s Winemaker.
The grapes for the Oldenburg Vineyards Rondekop Series Per Se Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 are harvested before dawn and chilled overnight before being destemmed, crushed and hand sorted. After a 3 day cold soak fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. Pump overs were performed up to three times a day. The wine was then taken to 78% new French Oak Barrels for 19 months, during which time Malolactic fermentation took place. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label depicts the 8 natural elements which occur on the Estate. In the glass, the wine is a deep bloodplum which pales out to a vibrant ruby at the edges. The aromas and the palate segue one into the other. Purple flowers, Crème de Cassis and toasted nuts are followed by a ‘big boy’ of a wine on entry. A line of roadside bramble acidity runs through into the long lasting aftertaste. The palate is rich and generous, fruit abounding. Vanilla and sweet brown spice at the end. A truly impressive glass, eminently drinkable now but with cool cellaring will go for another 8 to 10 years.
The Oldenburg Vineyards Rondekop Series Per Se Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is perfect with food. It could also be the special bottle you have after dinner by the fire with some snappy black chocolate. We found it a great accompaniment to a marinated and grilled Blue Wildebeest fillet. Simple done with Soy Sauce, Sesame Oil and Honey marinade overnight. Deliciously tender.
