Mynhardt Joubert, former ballet dancer, and restaurateur, is a man who flies under the radar. True of many who are highly talented and just get on with doing good.
Mynhardt Joubert Christmas Cake
I start with his Christmas Cakes. He makes many, many Christmas Cakes each year using products given by kind sponsors and the takings are given to Children’s Charities. One year, he sent me a cake and the ingredients to make one for myself.
My Stasie Straat Kombuis also available in English as My Stasie Street Kitchen
Mynhardt has recently launched a cookery book, My Station Street Kitchen. He operates there and also in the Cathedral Cellar at th KWV Winery in Paarl. He is Ambassador Chef to KWV. This is the most enchanting book, with fabulous photography by Donna Lewis and the food styling done by Mynhardt himself. The Breads and Butters section is a joy. I am not into black food fan, but Mynhardt’s Charcoal Ciabatta, I found very beguiling. The Brioche and the mosbolletjies, make one want to reach in the page and break off a piece. There is a lovely spread of nations too, France, Italy, Vietnam, Thailand and and and. This is a book which I keep in my kitchen, pages covered in oil, vinegar and tomato.
A little while ago, a box arrived with ingredients to cook a meal to go with wines from the Laborie Wine Estate, KWV’s jewel on the Main Road in Paarl, where some pretty exciting wines are being produced. One of the products was a Rib Eye Steak from Goede Hoop, a family-owned butchery on the Paarl Main Road. If I lived in the Cape, I would certainly drive there for my meats. I have had meat from them before from Mynhardt – excellent.
Some time ago, Laborie Wine Estate launched new livery for their wines. Beautiful, elegant labels, though good wine of course needs no bush.
One of my favourites is the Laborie Sauvignon Blanc 2020. Such utterly delicious Sauvignon Blanc everythings, aromas, flavours, mouth feel, and aftertaste. Picking at different stages of the ideal ripeness window has resulted in the green ‘cut grass’ herbaceous whiffs which are joined by white guava, an arrangement of tropical fruits, desiccated pineapple and Granny Smith apples. Lovely acidity line going through from entry, through the rich and generous palate and well into the long and gently waning aftertaste.
My best red is the Laborie Merlot 2020. One of the most popular wines ordered by the glass in restaurants and wine bars. One does not condemn it with faint praise by saying that it is an easy drinking wine. It is, as all well made wines are. This wine is smooth, elegant and sappy. The aromas and flavours are of raspberry, bloodplums, black olive tapenade, fynbos herbs and cherry tobacco. A fine tannin structure takes the flavours harmoniously on to the palate of oak and its concomitant spices and vanilla, and fabulous fruit and into the long and gently waning aftertaste.
