Groot Constantia Rosé 2022
Groot Constantia Wine Estate was granted to Simon van der Stel, former Dutch Governor of the Cape of Good Hope in 1685. A short drive from the centre of the city of Cape Town, I regard Groot Constantia as the Cradle of the South African Wine Industry. Here great wines were made in the late 1700s by Hendrik Cloete and Constantia wine was found in the cellars of royalty, politicians and writers like Baudelaire, the French writer, Charles Dickens and Jane Austen two celebrated English writers. Napoleon, when in exile on the Isle of St Helena had Constantia Wine shipped to him there before his demise.
Floricius Beukes [left], the Vineyardist on Groot Constantia, and his team provide the fine grapes to Boela Gerber [right], the award-winning wine maker. They practice pest control, and soil health and weed control are managed by a selected mix of winter cover crop. In the cellar Boela and his team transform the grapes into magic.
Once fermented in stainless steel tanks, the wine was left on the lees for two months before preparation for bottling.
