Landskroon Wine Estate on the southwest facing slopes of the iconic Paarl Mountain in the Paarl Wine Appellation has been owned and managed by the De Villiers Family for 5 generations. Each of the five Cellarmasters has been named Paul. Renowned for their Port Style and red wines in former times. Paul de Villiers V now produces a wide range of wines which I feel should be better known by the public. Great Wines and excellent quality to price ratio.
Shiraz Grapes ripening on the vine
The Landskroon Shiraz received a Gold Award at the Ultra Value Wine Challenge and 3.5 stars as a good Value Wine.
Once harvested, the bunches were destalked, and the grapes taken to open top fermenters. The mash was then inoculated with a selected yeast and fermentation took place at between 25C and 28C. Once fermented dry, the grapes are pressed, and the wine taken to a mix of previous fill French and American Oak Barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle. Closed with natural cork. In the glass, a rich plum in colour at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are of country lane fruits, plums, brambles and fraises des bois. The palate has a beautiful line of acidity running through well into the long and gently waning aftertaste. It is rich and generous with spicy smoked red and black fruits supported by fine tannins and the spice and vanilla from the oak barrels. Delicious.
Dalewood Fromage Huguenot Cheese
Pair
The Landskroon Shiraz 2019 is made for good food. Loves meat off the braai, in casserole or out of the oven. Excellent too with a good slice of Dalewood Fromage 6 month matured Huguenot Cheese, perhaps accompanied with homemade sand biscuits, flavoured with a touch of Dijon Mustard. You will find recipes for these on the Internet. Click HERE for more information about Dalewood Fromage.
Paul de Villiers’s Merlot 2020 was awarded a slot in the 2022 Hallo Merlot Top Ten Awards for their 2020 Vintage. Quite right too, it’s a stunner.
