One might get tired of writing about the five generations of the De Villiers Family who have owned and managed Landskroon Wine Estate on the southwestern slopes of that iconic wineland Paarl Mountain. One might, though all wines need a story. A good, honest, genuine story. Landskroon has it in spadefuls. Paul de Villiers V is the fifth Paul Cellarmaster since the family moved there in the 19th Century. The other stories are the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year for their Port style wine, for which they have been well known for years. Have taken the wines into modern times showing finesse, elegance, excellent fruit and a high quality to price ration, Paul V and his team have taken every piece of silverware at the SA Young Wine Show, a benchmark for winemakers to show what the 2022 vintage has brought us.

As for the Landskroon Pinotage 2020, the grapes are harvested on the Estate and taken to the cellar where, after destalking the wine is made in both open and closed top fermentation tanks. Once fermented and pressed the wine is taken to a mix of new, 2nd and 3rd fill French and American Oak Barrels. The wine is then prepared for bottling.

Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is simple and elegant and does the wine great justice. The aromas are of the red parent of Pinotage, Pinot Noir. In the glass, the wine is bloodplum read at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. Medium of body, makes for a delicious vin de soif, even better when slightly chilled. Plums and raspberries are to be found in the round, soft mouthfeel and an undertow of tannins. Will happily stay the course if cool cellared for 5 to 6 years. Fine example of South Africa’s Pinotage grape. Recently a respected wine writer said of Landskroon. “they are nailing ripeness, pinpoint freshness, savoury juicy and a [are] pleasure to drink.”

As I said the Landskroon Pinotage 2020, chilled, makes for a great sipping wine. Perfect for good food, paired with such South African classics like Tomato Bredie, a good length of braaied Boerewors. It is excellent at the end of a meal with a tranche of Dalewood Fromage Huguenot Cheese, 6 months aged. Read about Dalewood HERE.
