Landskroon Paul De Villiers Reserve 2018
The De Villiers family whose antecedents sailed from the French Atlantic Coast, fleeing religious persecution, and landed in Cape Town on 6th May 1689. 5 of the most recent generations of those three brothers have been named Paul and have made wine on the family estate, Landskroon on the Southwest facing slopes of the Paarl Mountain.
Cabernet Franc, minor grape in this blend
If one is to choose a flagship wine for the Estate, this would be it, a classical Bordeaux style blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Franc.
Landskroon Paul & Nelie de Villiers
Once in the cellar, Paul de Villiers V and his cellar team vinified and matured the three grape types separately. Fermented in open top fermenters with regular punch downs for colour and gentle tannin extraction, the wines were matured in new and second fill French Oak Barrels for 18 months. They were then blended and prepared for bottling.
Landskroon Barrel Cellar
Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle and closed with natural cork. The label is in black and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a gembright dark ruby at the heart which pales out towards the rim. The aromas are of Ribena, and other dark berries, shavings of pencils, and oak with its concomitant spice and vanilla. The palate from entry is fruit forward, with a lovely line of acidity, beautiful tannins and a long a satisfying aftertaste. An impressive glass from an impressive Cellarmaster, Paul de Villiers V, a Diners Club Winemaker of the Year. Worth your while to cool cellar it for a couple of years for greater reward.
