Travelling South African winemaker Jasper Raats recently received top ratings for the latest vintages of his New Zealand label Koru Wines. Raats and his wife Sally have been crafting some of the most sensational Sauvignon Blanc and luscious Pinot Noirs for the past seven years from their two one-hectare vineyards in the Wairau- valley, near Blenheim in Marlborough.
Robert Parker’s definitive publication The Wine Advocate recently awarded the intensely elegant 2007 Koru Sauvignon Blanc a rating of 91 points, which is reserved only for wines considered to be outstanding and of superior character and style. Parker is widely considered to be one of the most influential wine critics in the world and his bi-monthly newsletter, which was first published in 1978, has proven to have a profound effect both on prices and market demand for fine wines around the world.
The Wine Advocate reviewer loved the “intense aromas of grapefruit peel, passion fruit, kiwi, herbs, mange tout and a whiff of wet slate. Crisp, concentrated and full bodied with a nice bit of viscosity, there are notes of citrus peel and minerals in the very long finish.”
Jasper Raats reckons that the pleasure of a well-made matured Sauvignon is one of the best kept wine secrets. “And Koru is made to age. I think a Sauvignon that is ripe and not made in a rush can be absolutely magnificent once secondary flavours start to develop. Even Wine Advocate agreed that the style of the Koru should age well for another four to six years.”
This wine also impressed UK wine critic Jaime Goode, who gave it 93 points in his Wineanorak ratings and considers it to be one of the very best Kiwi Sauvignons out there.
The 2007 Pinot Noir also received widespread acclaim with a full 5-star score in Michael Coopers New Zealand Wine Guide the NZ equivalent of the Platter Guide. This wine earlier also received 93 points from Jamie Goode. He describes this Kiwi Pinot as the best he’s yet tried from Marlborough. “This is special. Beautifully smooth, pure, complex, elegant nose of dark cherry and plum fruit with some deeper spice and herb notes. The palate is concentrated and intense with lovely rich cherry fruit, but its trademark is that it is just so elegant, with a wonderful minerality and smooth, silky texture.”
“Our wines are hand-made by us all the way to the bottle. We want to make exceptional wines that we love and we have tried to create something truly unique. It is then especially gratifying when your wines received such incredible acknowledgements from world-renowned critics,” mentions Jasper Raats.
