Groot Constantia Lady of Abundance 2018, perfect with Lamb Chops off the braai…

Groot Constantia Lady of Abundance 2018

Groot Constantia Wine Estate, I regard as the Cradle of the Wine Industry. Situated in the southern suburbs about 20 minutes drive from the city centre in the Constantia Wine Appellation.

This is the second vintage of this wine, and as one expects from this winery, a step up from the first vintage.

A blend of 36% Shiraz, 35% Merlot, 26% Pinotage, and 3% Tannat, the vines are planted in various soils, from red clay and loamy granite soils, duplex soils from sandstone and granite origin, and weathered sandstone ranging from 40 to 160 m above sea level. Cooling breezes blow down over the Constantia Mountain ameliorating he summer heat in the vineyards. This allow for a longer hang time for the bunches, which equals greater flavour and aromas in the harvested grapes.

The grapes were handpicked and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks with regular pump overs during fermentation. The different components were aged separately for 12 months in 10% new, 35% 2nd fill,35% 3rd fill and 20% 4th fill French oak barrels before blending and bottling.

and off to Monticella in Virginia USA to make wine there

Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, with the word Constantia embossed on the glass just below the neck. The bottle is closed with natural cork. The label is simple and classical in the style of a French Chateau with an enchanting etching of the Manor House. The Lady of Abundance features in a little niche in the main gable of the Manor House. The aromas are a mass of sweet ripe berry fruits and plums, beautifully supported by some very clever oaking, The flavours segue on to the palate which is rich and generous with a lovely line of acidity and fine soft tannins. The wine is eminently drinkable now and happy to be drunk on its own. The Groot Constantia Lady of Abundance 2018 has all the attributes of a wine which will mature well.

Lamb Chops grilling on the Braai

Pair
The wine is perfect on its own, though just wonderful with food. A grid of barbecued lamb chops is an ideal partner
