Groot Constantia Lady of Abundance 2018
Groot Constantia Wine Estate is in the Constantia Wine Appellation, a mere 20 minutes’ drive from the Cape Town City Bowl. One of the first estates in Constantia to be granted in 1685. And it was this farm which provided a ‘golden era’ for Cape Wine in Europe. The wine was sent to Europe and graced the cellars of the crowned heads of Europe, William Pitt the Younger had it in his Cellar at No 10 Downing Street. The likes of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens the French writer Baudelaire all extolled the virtues of Constantia Wine. Napoleon, in exile on St Helena, a small Island in the Atlantic, had regular shipments of the wine sent from Cape Town.
The responsibility for the premium wines produced on the Estate today lies on the shoulders of Floricius Beukes, the Vineyardist and Boela Gerber, Groot Constantia’s multi award winning winemaker.
This is the second vintage of the Groot Constantia Lady of Abundance 2018. A blend of 36% Shiraz, 35% Merlot, 26% Pinotage and 3% Tannat. Wikipedia tells that ‘Tannat is a red wine grape, historically grown in South West France in the Madiran AOC, and is now one of the most prominent grapes in Uruguay, where it is considered the “national grape.”
After alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks with the concomitant manual punch down, the wine goes for a year to French Oak Barrels of which 10% were new, the remainder being 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fill barrels. Having been separately vinified and matured, the wine is prepared for bottling.
The perfect pairing could be a Beef Short Rib Casserole
