Andrew Barns of Mischa Wine Estate in the Wellington Wine Appellation has been winning awards for his wine, yet has remained below the radar. This wine will not only introduce you to a seasoned wine producer, but perhaps introduce you to a new grape, Petite Sirah. Not Shiraz or Syrah it is a grape also known as Durif after its creator, much like Pinotage here.
In the 1880s, French botanist François Durif crossed the Syrah and Peloursin grapes—some suspect by accident—to create Durif. Despite its French origins the grape does not really exist in this country today. The grape has done well in Australia, Israel, South Africa and California, where it has a strong following.
