Domaines Schlumberger Riesling Les Princes Abbés 2020, perfect with My Gamekeeper’s Chicken Pot…

Domaines Schlumberger Riesling Les Princes Abbés 2020

Alsace, a wine province of France, was ceded to France from Germany at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. So, it is not quite German and not quite French.  The wines tend to be made from what we think of as German varieties, like Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Sylvaner amongst others. The food of Alsace embraces dishes like Coq au Riesling, Choucroute Garni, Blue Trout and the wonderful Onion Tart, flatter than the French Quiche filled with soft fried onions and ham shreds set in a delicious custard.

The Schlumberger Family own and manage their own 135 hectares of vineyards, one of the largest in Alsace. The first Schlumberger, Claus, moved to Guebwiller in the XVI century. As he couldn’t bear the domination of the monks, he moved to Mulhouse, a free and Protestant town. At his death, several Schlumberger family members came from Souabe in Germany to settle in Mulhouse. Like Claus himself most of them were tanners.

The Domaines Schlumberger Riesling Les Princes Abbés 2020 is a total joy of a wine. I am very fond of Riesling and this one does it for me…
