The 2010 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year announced on November 27th is Bartho Eksteen from the Hermanuspietersfontein winery near Hermanus.
The wine that won him the Trophy was wooded Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Blend Hermanuspietersfontein Sauvignon Blanc No 5.
Eksteen has set him self up as a practitioner of the production of excellent Sauvignon Blanc, and this Award is confirmation of his success.
Taking home the trophy for the 2010 Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year is RJ Botha from Nitida Cellars in Durbanville for his 2009 Nitida Calligraphy, a vibrant, Bordeaux-style blend, comprising 47% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, made from grapes from the winery’s own vineyards in the cool Durbanville hills.
These awards are a benchmark for the industry and are regarded as one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine making competitions.
Apart from the prestige associated with winning the competition, Bartho received a South African Airways return ticket to any wine-producing country in the world plus expenses. RJ walked away with a cash prize and a head start in the wine industry.
