The Delaire Graff Wine Estate sits on the cusp of the Helshoogte Pass as you drop down into the Banghoek Valley in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. A perfect destination which offers a fine wine experience in their tasting lounge, where you can buy a case or two to take the memories home. There is a beautiful set of lodges which sit on the side of the Botmaskop overlooking the Simonsberg and Stellenbosch. There is a luxury spa in the lodges. There are shops, a Jewellery Boutique containing the works of Laurence Graff the owner of the Estate. Casual wear and other fine fashion items are also available.
Two Award winning restaurants cheffed by Kayla Ann Osborn and Virgil Kahn offer the finest of dishes which are perfect partners to the Estate’s wines. Art works by South African artists garnish the walls and, in the garden, there are beautiful bronzes by well-known sculptor, Dylan Lewis.
The 2020 crop was much affected by the windy conditions. The kilos per vine were lighter, the smaller berries intense with flavour. Once harvested in the early hours off the slopes of the Helshoogte and Helderberg Mountains, the Cabernet Franc grapes were destemmed and gently pressed. Once the fermentation process was completed, the wine lay in its lees. Made by Morné Very and his team in the same way as the Estate’s fine Sauvignon Blanc in order to maintain the freshness and fruit of the wine. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a clear glass Burgundy shaped bottle, the wine is closed with a silver screw cap. The label is simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is the colour of a pink shell. The aromas segue into the palate where the wine is crisp, sappy and dry. The fraises des bois, strawberry spun sugar and blackcurrants are so Cabernet Franc. The wine is ready for now drinking.
The Delaire Graff Cabernet Franc Rosé 2020 will find partners on the menus of The Delaire Graff Restaurant and Indochine. A great partner to a Crayfish and Fennel Mayonnaise open sandwich on a sour dough bruschetta. Chicken or angelfish in a lightly curried mayonnaise would work well. As a snack in the evening, or as the starter to a meal, my Fish Paté with a crisp baguette is a good match. Click HERE for the recipe.
