De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage 2020

De Grendel Wine Estate is situated in the Durbanville Wine Appellation, though situated on the Western slopes of the Tygerberg. The Estate looks on to Table Mountain and is 7 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean with its cold Benguela Current, which blows it chilly breezes over the vineyard, cooling them from the Summer heat and allowing a longer slower period of ripening, resulting in more colour and more flavour in the final wines. The trellised Pinotage Vineyards are planted in broken blue shale which drains well after rains.

The vineyard, situated next to an Almond Orchard where Sir De Villiers Graaff 4th Baronet and current owner of the Estate used to ride with his grandfather, Farmer, Statesman and Businessman, Sir De Villiers Graff, 2nd Baronet Graaff of Cape Town.

De Grendel’s Founding Winemaker, Charles Hopkins

Picked by hand at dawn before the Summer heat rises on the vineyards, once in the cellar the grapes are crushed by Founding Winemaker Charles Hopkins and his team and are fermented in open tanks with pneumatic punch downs every 6 hours. After fermentation, the grapes are basket pressed and the wine taken to stainless steel tanks to undergo malolactic fermentation. Once complete, the wine is racked into 225 litre French and American Oak barrels where it lies for a year. 12% of the barrels were new while the remainder were previous fill. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

Sir De Villiers Graaff, 4th Baronet

From a Burgundy shaped bottle closed with en elegant screw cap. The livery is simple elegant, gold on black. In the glass, the wine is a deep dark bloodplum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the rim. The aromas are of spiced plums, cherry tobacco, and the gentle oak with its concomitant sweet spice and vanilla. The palate is, from entry, a mélange of flavours, mainly red fruits and red and blackberries, the softest of tannins and a brilliant acid line going through to the very satisfying and gently waning aftertaste. Eminently drinkable now, and will reward after a couple of years of cool cellaring. A very impressive glass of wine.

The De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage 2020 is an ideal sipping wine in the early evening as you wait for the braai fire to come to the correct temperature. Food of the braai works well with Pinotage, especially a delicious spicy piece of Boerewors. On cooler evenings, a gentle curry or a risotto flavoured with Choriço and streaky bacon would be the perfect partner.
