Werner Schrenk, the GM and Winemaker on Groenvlei Farm, home to Peter Falke Wines is a bit of a stickler for neatness and order. His immaculate vineyards on the slopes of the Helderberg in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation are perfectly positioned to produce high quality grapes.  Careful bunch sorting in the vineyards eliminates those bunches which may be burned of raisined or not yet fully ripe grapes. Further sorting in the cellar removes MOG [material other than grapes], leaves, stalks and berries which are not fit for the making of the Estate’s fine wines. The Peter Falke PF Pinot Noir 2017 is one of these.

From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is classical elegant and simple and in keeping with the rest of the PF Range. In the glass, the wine is a magnificent translucent cherry at the heart which pales out to delicate ruby at the edges. The aromas are much affected by the terroir of the grapes, Pinot Noir’s destiny is to reflect its surroundings, the soil in which the vines are planted and the climate in the vineyards. The climate is a maritime one with cooling breezes blowing over the vineyards. And ameliorating the summer heat, causing slower ripening and thus fuller flavour in the grapes. The palate is full and rich and round – redolent of cherries and fraises des bois. The French oak lends its soft brown spices and vanilla. Fulsome mid palate and a long and gently waning aftertaste. Elegant, balanced and a delicious glass.

The Peter Falke PF Pinot Noir 2017, is a very versatile wine. Do chill it before serving. Though it is enchantingly delicate, we must remember that it is the wine of Coq au Vin and Beef Bourguignon.
