Cloof Wine Estate is nestled amongst vineyards in the Wine Appellation of Darling. Cloof is truly off the beaten track, and it’s the road less travelled that leads you to places that will be etched in your mind forever. As it was with me. An enchanting quiet place and I remember visiting there and being beguiled by the many birds and flora on the windy road from the town of Darling. The ideal place for making fine wine.
The grapes for this wine, harvested on the Estate from an 18 year old vineyard, a special block which has bigger berries. Once fermenting, daily pump overs occur. After pressing the wine spends a year in French oak barrels. It is the blended and prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is in black and red, quirky name and has an air of mystery about it. In the glass it is a deep bloodplum red at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas segue into the palate. Plums, red and black berries, and the oak with its concomitant spice and vanilla. In the aftertaste the tannins are soft, with the fruit and the acidity all in harmony in the long and gently waning aftertaste. An impressive glass, eminently drinkable now, though will reward you after a year or two of cool cellaring.
The Cloof The Very Sexy Shiraz 2018 is a wine excellent for sipping, and brilliant with food. We loved Hein van Tonder’s Ostrich Meatballs in Spicy Plum Sauce, a perfect partner.
