Bruce Jack’s, Ghost in the Machine Elgin Chardonnay 2020
Bruce Jack is one of the most energetic of Winemakers. The kilometres travelled to look after vineyards from which he draws his grapes are unimaginable. Then at harvest time it is helter skelter all over the province.
Bruce is a pioneer in pushing the envelope beyond the experimental boundaries of the cutting edge of winemaking. The Ghost in the Machine Wines are made in The Drift Cellar from specially selected vineyards that he and his team manage to their exacting specifications.
Let’s deal with the name “Ghost in the Machine.” Bruce has an extraordinarily eclectic mind and with his English training at St Andrews University in Scotland, he says “Ghost in the Machine” refers to the resilience of human imagination in the face of an artificial-intelligence-dominated onslaught.
Chardonnay – the perfect bunch
The grapes are hand picked, taken to the cellar where the juice is pressed and then allowed to settle clear. The juice then goes to French Oak Barrels for both Alcoholic and partial Malolactic Fermentation, and then maturation for 8 months in barrel.
Hand picked fruit, pressed, settled and racked to barrel for fermentation. Combination of natural and inoculated yeast. Partial malolactic fermentation, 8 months in barrel.
Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle and closed with a screw cap. The label is beyond quirky and huge fun. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden hay colour. The aromas are just so typical of an Elgin Chardonnay. Clean, citrussy, white peaches. Touch of Fynbos honey. The good news is that all these segue into the palate and ends, mineral tipped and a long harmonious after taste with a lovely line of acidity from entry to the ending.

Pair
The Ghost in the Machine Elgin Chardonnay 2020, is a serious wine. Perfect as an aperitif leading into a meal, the first course of which would also be a great partner for the wine. A beautiful butter roasted organic chicken, some real gravy and the usual accompaniments is the perfect partner. Alida Ryder’s Kick Ass Roast Chicken would be my choice, it is utterly delicious.
