There is an old stockman’s adage “competition breeds best” and this quite possibly lies at the heart of the SA Young Wine Show – a competition where the latest vintage’s wines are assessed blind by wine professionals in over 110 categories. The SA Young Wine 2016 attracted more than 1600 entries. The fine showing for Boplaas can only be attributed to the dedicated efforts of all the vineyard teams, cellar staff and winemakers Carel and Margaux Nel.
The commitment to crafting authentic Cape “Port” styled fortified wines from Portuguese varietals continues to garner success with the SA Champion Port trophy won by fortifieds crafted from traditional Portuguese Port varietals and by traditional methods.
The 2016 Vintage Ports are marked by exceptional colour, tannin structure, fruit concentration and complexity which will after barrel maturation, blending and bottling offer consumers enjoyment over the coming decades. A total of four gold medals were awarded across the four Port classes, with Boplaas accounting for three gold medals.
Boplaas once again punched well above its weight with four gold medals and one SA Champion.
Boplaas also clinched a gold medal for Touriga Nacional red wine. We are rated as a top producer of red wine made from Portuguese cultivars and the flagship Gamka red wine (blend of Touriga Nacional and other red grapes) got a 91 rating from Tim Atkins.
