Alto Winery, on the slopes of the Helderberg – an Estate well worth the visit…

Alto Winery, on the slopes of the Helderberg

Alto Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation is on the slopes of the majestic Helderberg Mountains and perfectly situated to receive cooling breezes off False Bay to cool the trellised vineyards and ameliorate the Summer heat. A perfect place for red wine varieties. The Estate has been producing wine for a hundred years. In the early days, wine was taken in barrels by horse and cart to the harbour in Cape Town for export. Today the wines are elegantly packaged in glass bottles. There have been 5 winemakers at Alto, with Bertho van der Westhuizen, the current incumbent having taken over from his father, Schalk, a year or two ago.

Bertho van der Westhuizen in the Alto Barrel Cellar

At a visit to this fine Estate, guests can go for a stroll through the Estates Barrel Maturation Cellar. While the wines are available nationally in good wine shops and supermarkets, there is nothing like a tasting for you to make up your mind which is best suited to your tastes. Make sure to put a box or two into your boot.

The Alto Biltong & Wine Pairing

To accompany the wine tastings, Alto offers a Biltong & Wine Pairing and Cheese Platter. Each a story flavour. The Alto Biltong pairing is designed to highlight a characteristic in the wine. Cost is R140 per person, with all five of the Estates wines paired with 5 unique biltong flavours. The Alto Cheese Platter which costs R160 offers 3 cheeses, biltong, fresh fruit and a preserve. Relax on the deck looking out over the winelands.

Wine Tastings are offered as follows, Alto Estate Tasting (5 Estate Wines) – R50.
Signature Tasting ( Estate wines including Signature Blend, subject to availability) – R65,
MPHS tasting ( Estate wines including MPHS) – R75, and the Premium Tasting – R90 (all 7 wines, subject to availability)
