In my quest to bring you some interesting wines for Christmas, Advent Calendar #6 is from the Bon Courage Wine Estate. Bon Courage is situated in the Robertson Wine Appellation and is owned and managed by the multi award winning Bruwer Family with André as paterfamilias and son Jacques who is responsible for the wines. They us such clever names for their wines and The Bon Courage The Mulberry Bush Merlot 2016 has not only a clever name, but it is a truly lovely Merlot.
Once in the cellar Jacques Bruwer and his team cold soaked one the skins before fermentation. Once malolactic fermentation had taken place, the wine was delicately oaked, and then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle under screw cap. Elegant simple livery. In the glass, the wine is a deep plum colour which pales out to garnet at the edges. Whiffs of bright fruit, plums, a generosity of mulberries and roadside brambles. Lovely rounded mouthfeel, silk soft tannins, medium of body.

In my opinion, a Bobotie wine. It loves spicy foods, and a well-cooked Aubergine Parmesan Tomato bake is magic as a match. It also makes a fine glass on its own, Merlot is the go-to soft red.
