What was the defining moment in your life that set you on the path of becoming a winemaker?
My father worked for Distell, so wine was very familiar to me while growing up. I also first studied microbiology at Stellenbosch, but soon became more intrigued with wine (hello wine tastings and Stellenbosch Wine Route) and what makes a wine a wine. So clearly I was hooked!

Where did you train to become a winemaker?
At the University of Stellenbosch

Who would you regard as your mentor?
It is difficult to name just one person, because with all the different harvests experience in different wineries locally and internationally and for each new person you meet in the industry you gain a little more wine wisdom.

You work with a selection of some of the world’s most noble grape varieties. Is there one other variety with which you would really like to work?
Pinot Noir

Is there another wine you would like to make in your cellar with the varieties available to you there?
Maybe a MCC?

If you could choose anywhere in the world to make wine other than where you are now, where would it be?
New Zealand

I know it is a bit tricky asking a father to choose his favourite child, but which one of your wines is your current favourite?
Our Landskroon Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, never disappoints.

Stellenzicht Plum Pudding Hill 2012, just amazing! Thanks Guy Webber!

What is your favourite style of food?
Anything Italian, pasta, pizza. And if you haven’t watched the movie Little Italy, please do!

Your best style of restaurant, you enjoy visiting? Why?
Any Cattle Baron is a real winner, especially the Paarl Cattle Baron. It usually has a very relaxed atmosphere, with a good wine selection and tasty food for any food preference.

Your ideal dinner party guest?
Elon Musk, I just want to know how he thinks and what he’s planning for SpaceX. Also how he came to be where he is today.

Your favourite holiday destination?
I’m a beach bum for sure so any destination near the sea

What is on your bedside table as reading matter at the moment?
The Target by David Baldacci, he is one of my favourite authors.

One piece of music you would take with you to a desert island?
Message in a bottle by Police, maybe someone will get my S.O.S

I’m currently working on…. figuring out what my new hobby will be. Golf? Mountain biking? So many to choose from.

My favourite weekend getaway is…. in Yzerfontein, Elandsbaai
