The very first Stellenbosch Wine Festival was held in the Stellenbosch Town Hall. It was known as Die Stellenbosch Wyn en Voedsel Fees and was a celebration run by the wives of some of the best known winemakes of Stellenbosch. Amongst the ones that I can remember are Annetjie Melck, now of Muratie, Jean van Velden of Overgaauw, Liza Malan of Simonsig, Vera Sperling from Delheim. There were of course others from a group, which included the above, called the Stellenbosch Fynproewersgilde. A huge fun affair in which Waterblommetjie, pancakes, koeksister, Bobotie were served, a dish from each wine producer at their own wine stands.
The charming and well run affair has now evolved into one of the highlights on the SA wine calendar, The Stellenbosch Wine Festival presented by Pick n Pay. This now fabulous affair is back and will once again be hosted at the iconic Coetzenburg Sports Grounds from Friday, 23rd to Sunday, 25th February 2018.
Here you have the members of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes offering their wines in a modern , family-friendly, relaxed and entertaining format.
The Festival has become well-known by wine-lovers far and wide for showcasing some of the finest wines the country has to offer and this year offers two exceptional consumer experiences, a General Wine Tasting Experience and a Premium Wine Tasting Experience. For the General Wine Tasting Experience, you have the chance to taste and purchase from a selection of the best wines from 60 wine farms. You get an International Specification Wine Tasting Glass for the tastings and a cashless card with 20 free pre-loaded tastings . The Premium Wine Tasting Experience includes award winning Wine of Origin Stellenbosch wines, seven wine grape variety tables where you will meet the winemakers, a branded wine glass for tasting, a cashless card with 30 free pre-loaded tastings and a complimentary Charcuterie platter per person.
There are shaded seating areas, and the Gourmet Food Lane, with live entertainment. Children can be dropped at the Momentum Health Kiddies Area (a free check-in service where the little ones (ages 2 – 12years) will be looked after and entertained for the day). Festival goers can shop to their heart’s content as Aramex again offers a complimentary wine delivery service for all wine purchased at the Festival – free to any address in South Africa. What a great offering.
In keeping with contemporary trends the festival employs a cashless system that will allow visitors to enjoy the festival with a safe and manageable event currency solution. Every stand you purchase from, whether you’re buying wine by the bottle or food from Gourmet Lane, will be set up with a point of sale system that works like a debit card. The cashless card is included in your ticket price and will be pre-loaded with either 20 or 30 tastings, depending on the ticket package you purchase. If your card runs out of credit or tasting coupons you can go back to the branded cashless area, or an available staff member will load the card as needed.

The Stellenbosch Winelands are famed with foodies the world over, and there will be a veritable feast of fresh artisanal foods and signature dishes from some of the best eateries in the area. With wines from over 60 different wine farms, delicious food, great live music and a host of fun outdoor activities, the weekend is set to be one you don’t want to miss. All this in one of the country’s most beautiful settings – what more could anyone ask for?
