The Old Road Wine Company [ORWC] may not be well known as a producer of fine wines. As wine drinkers we have a duty to taste these wines as they are very special. ORWC has some of its own vineyards in the town of Franschhoek, where the wines are made by Ryan Puttick, an enthusiastic and exciting young winemaker. ORWC has a tasting room situated on the right of the old road into Franschhoek. Here there is a restaurant and wine tastings and sales. Well worth a visit should you be in Franschhoek.
Anemos is an ancient Greek word for the origin of the wind which gently blows through the single 35-year-old vineyard of Chenin Blanc in the Franschhoek Wine Appellation which is the source of the grapes used in the Anemos Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2017. The wine is art of the Elite Range of Wines from ORWC. The vineyard started off as a trellised vineyard, though now it is an improvised bush vine. The grapes were harvested by hand and then destalked and crushed. Overnight on skin soaking took place. The skins were then pressed, and the juice settled clear before being taken to barrels for fermentation. A further 9 months in the barrel and maturing on the lees with regular stirring [batonnage]. This adds greater mouthfeel and flavour to the wine. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label depicts the wind in a subliminal design and clearly states the pedigree of the wine. In the glass, it is a pale straw colour. The aromas are of fine fruit, Bon Chretien pear, quince and tart white berry fruits. The wine is complex on a generous palate, the ample fruit being supported by the oak and its concomitant spice and vanilla. The depth and breadth of the flavours, the minerality, the oak and the acidity all point to a wine which will benefit from a couple of years of cool cellaring. An impressive glass.
The Anemos Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2017 is a wine for well prepared food. I always feel that a good organic chicken butter roasted is the perfect partner. Though there are many lovely versions of Roast Chicken and many other unusual dishes. Dianne Bibby’s Chicken Pastilla with Freekeh & Almonds is one of them. Freekeh is an ancient grain, full of fibre and protein. Click HERE for Dianne’s recipe and to have a browse round her fabulous website.
