Spier Wine Farm is in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation on a stretch of land between the Helderberg Mountains and the Polkadraai Hills. Under Cellarmaster Johan Jordaan the farm produces a wide range of wines in a perfect modern winery. The farmstead and its outbuildings house the magnificent simple elegant Manor house, The Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery, the Spier Café, an Eagle Encounter, Segway tours of the Vineyards and if you are tired after all that, a bed in the little village, which is The Spier Hotel.

The Good Natured Range of Wines are all organically grown and made by Tania Kleintjes, the Spier Organic Wine Specialist. The Spier Good Natured Chenin Blanc 2022 is made from grapes from Paarl, and Groenekloof, which is in the Darling Wine Appellation.

The wines are made organically, using the same procedures for a classical dry white wine. It matures for 4 months on its lees to broaden out the palate.

Pour

From a Burgundy Shaped Bottle, closed with a crew cap. The label is delicate and elegant. In the glass, it is a pale lemon straw in colour, gem bright. The aromas are of poached quince, Granny Smith apples, citrus, with white flowers and honey. These all segue on to the palate which has a lovely line of acidity, juicy and long.

The Spier Good Natured Chenin Blanc 2022 is a wine for any time. Without food, with food and especially, in my view, with cheese. I find more and more tat white wine is better with cheese than red. My Golden Sultana Agrodolce is delicious with Dalewood Fromage Winelands Camembert. Anna Del Conte, the fabled Italian cook who lives in London, She introduced me to the sweet-sour flavours, which we South African’s also enjoy.
