The Malan Family of Simonsig Wine Estate
Francois & Johan in front, Michael, Christelle & Francois-Jacques
Simonsig is the first wine estate you think of when you think Stellenbosch. Well I certainly do, our relationship goes back to 1977 when Madeleine, my wife ran the Tasting and Sales Venue on this Koelenhof Wine Estate. Simonsig is synonymous with the history of the South African wine industry, the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, and the Malan family name, all three generations.
Frans & Liza Malan, founders of Simonsig Wine Estate
These elements are intertwined in this family-owned farm, where the late Frans Malan produced the first bottle of our much-loved Kaapse Vonkel, South Africa’s first Méthode Cap Classique made in the classic bottle-fermented style. He is also honoured for co-founding the thriving Stellenbosch Wine Route, a first in its time. Today, his legacy and that of his wife Liza lives on through his sons, Francois – Vineyardist and Johan – Production Director, and grandchildren Francois-Jacques, Christelle and Michael, the 2nd and 3rd Malan generations at Simonsig Wine Estate.
A visit to Simonsig is a bit like a one-day destination. Enough to keep you there for the best part of a day.
