Rickety Bridge, in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley Wine Appellation was given a 5-Star rating and Joint Best Semillon Award for The Rickety Bridge The Pilgrimage 2017 Old Vine Semillon, a limited-edition wine produced from a vineyard block, planted in decomposed granitic soils, in 1905. The vines are gnarly and twisted, an unirrigated vineyard. Once in the cellar, with a tiny tonnage per hectare, the grapes were whole bunch pressed and then fermented with the natural vineyard yeasts and then matured for 11 months in a combination of foudres and older 500-litre barrels.
From a weighty Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork and sealed with blue wax. The label is elegant and in tune with the rest of the Icon range from the Estate. The wine is packaged in a satin-lined box. In the glass, the wine is a rich straw colour, gem bright. Whiffs of a variety of citrus, tropical flowers and the knowledge that you are in for something serious. From entry a golden thread of acidity runs through to the elegant and dry aftertaste. The palate is rich round and satin soft, with the soft skinned citrus, orange flower water and Nougat de Montélimar, traditionally made in Provencal homes of egg white, almonds and honey. It was not made by the professional Nougatiers, rather an artisanal sweetmeat. Being Sémillon, and from old vines, the wine is so majestic – ready to drink now, though the winery suggests that it can age with cool cellaring for a further ten years from harvest. This is a truly impressive glass.
The Rickety Bridge The Pilgrimage 2017 Old Vine Semillon is a food wine. Serve it chilled though not too cold for best enjoyment. Excellent with delicate vegetarian curry, braaied crayfish tails of you can afford them, or a poached tranche of fish with a mayonnaise sauce, flavoured either with tomato or curry.
